Very simple this month:

:{HAITI EARTHQUAKE}:
“A devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on January 12th. It was the worst earthquake to hit the country in 200 years. Up to three million people live in the area worst hit by the quake, which centred 10 miles south-west of the densely populated capital Port-Au-Prince. The latest estimates are 230,000 people killed, 300,000 injured and 1.2 million left needing emergency shelter.”

:{CHILE EARTHQUAKE}:
“On Saturday 27 February, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck Chile. The quake occurred under the sea floor, 70 miles north of Conception, the nearest large population centre. The city and surrounding areas are home to nearly 900,000 people. The resulting tsunami caused serious additional damage and loss of life. The Government of Chile has reported that 708 people have been killed and 1.5 million homes damaged.”

We’re here to unplan your afternoon and make the world a simpler place.

Good music, with good people, for a good reason and ridiculous eclecticism, guaranteed, since 2005.

:{THE ALWYNE}:
The Alwyne is a charming boozer, only a stones-throw from Highbury & Islington tube and the north end of Upper Street. They’ve got 22 draught beers and ciders, a large wine list and a full menu. And, we’re in safe hands, as the The Alwyne is under the stewardship of long-serving :{UA}: devotee, Rory.

I was very sad to read today that the BBC plans to close 6Music:
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article7041944.ece
“Mark Thompson, the Director-General, will admit that the corporation, which is funded by the £3.6 billion annual licence fee, has become too large and must shrink to give its commercial rivals room to operate.”

If this is true, it feels entirely wrong-headed to me:
1: Dropping 6Music won’t give “commercial rivals room to operate”, as the station’s audience is not a priority for the commercial sector.

2: 6Music has an annual budget of around £6 million which, out of the £3.6 billion garnered from the licence fee, is small change.

3: 6Music’s audience may be small, compared to Radio 1 and 2, but they are 700,000 people who aren’t served elsewhere within the BBC [or beyond].

4: Surely this is part of the BBC’s public service broadcaster remit and tweaking Radio 2’s schedule won’t satisfy 6Music’s listeners [who are license payers too].

5: 6Music does a valuable job of breaking new bands, Florence & The Machine being a good, current example, who then move on to Radio 1, win BRIT Awards, etc.

6: 6Music is probably sounding more cohesive than ever [especially during daytime] and commands listener loyalty that other stations would kill for.

7: Eight years after its launch, wouldn’t the real waste of the license fee be to spend millions of pounds building a station, only to close it down?

If any of this bothers you, please make some noise, whether it’s complaining to Auntie Beeb [details above], using social networking gubbins, or writing something for:

Dear Santa,
We have been very good boys and girls this year, so we’re writing to let you know what we want for our :{Unplanned Christmas}:
We would like to have a big party with all our friends and we would like to play the best music in the world, and jump up and down a lot. Oh, and one more thing, we would like to say Bo!!ocks to Poverty. This is because we think all humans have equal rights to food, education, security, healthcare and freedom of opinion. And, we would like to end poverty. Together.
Big Lurrve,
ActionAid, Prolix and The Unplanned Allstars.

:{Unplanned Afternoons}: is bringing Christmas to Brick Lane. Based on a guiding principal of ridiculous eclecticism, the Unplanned Allstars will be playing old stuff, new stuff and somewhere inbetween stuff. It’s the songs you love and never get to hear, plus new tunes you won’t be able to live without. The event is taking place from 3pm-1am at the fabulous Corbet Place venue, just off Brick Lane - ten hours of tunes, for you, for free.

:{CORBET PLACE}:
Corbet Place is part of the Old Truman Brewery, next to the red, double-decker bus at the end of Dray Walk and you can find directions here:
Earlier this year, friends of :{Unplanned Afternoons}: Liz McCord and Tim Houghton volunteered for ActionAid in India. They worked on a community centre and homeless shelter project in Delhi, which they helped to renovate and improve. Liz and Tim will be exhibiting photos from their time working with ActionAid and prints, Christmas cards and postcards will be available to buy, with all proceeds going to ActionAid.
[ActionAid is a registered charity, no. 274467].

:{THE UNPLANNED ALLSTARS}:
As you may know by now, we play the best music in the world, every month at :{Unplanned Afternoons}: and all the money collected goes to charity. We’ve got some old stuff, new stuff and somewhere inbetween stuff. It’s the songs you love and never get to hear, plus new tunes you won’t be able to live without. We’re here to unplan your afternoon and make the world a simpler place.

[Ginger Tom Facebook Group]
A rock and roll fireball roaring out of North London, Ginger Tom sound like a no-holds barred fistfight between The B52s and Buzzcocks, refereed by Jarvis. Singer, bassist and good time girl, George Tom used to be in The Schla La Las. In 2008 she heard a rumour that boys could play too and gathered about her a crack team of men. Imagine. Leo Tom, who in his Black Madonnas days played with Queens Of The Stone Age, isn’t afraid to put his guitar where his mouth is. Michael Tom channels Tommy Iommi every time he picks up his axe and Thom Tom’s drumming hero is Sleater-Kinney’s Janet Weiss. ’Mazing. Expect crunchy hooks, barbed lyrics and bloody-hell good licks, and gird yourself up for a riot on the dance floor. These cats are cool.

“Ginger Tom rip a new rock a***hole. The singer’s dirty laugh of a voice the perfect accompaniment.”
“My favourite act was the band on at the end, who are called Ginger Tom. The lead singer is an adorable redhead called George a-go-go. Annaspiv and I agreed that we would definitely like to spit-roast her.”

:{CENTREPOINT}:
Centrepoint give homeless young people a future
www.centrepoint.org.uk
Centrepoint is a charity that provides emergency accommodation, support, information and training for homeless young people. It was founded in 1969 by Ken Leech, vicar of St Anne’s, Soho. Concerned about the number of young people sleeping rough in the West End of London, he and a group of local volunteers opened up the basement of St Anne’s Church, Soho, as a temporary night shelter. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2009, Centrepoint looks very different to how it did then. We now have 33 services across London and in the North East of England. We provide far more than just a bed for the 825 young people with whom we work each day. Through our award-winning support and development approach we help them with their personal, social, learning and work needs and give them somewhere safe that they can call home.

:{It’s Warmer Where You’re Waiting, It Feels More Like July}:

Aaah, glorious July, you are on average the warmest month in most of the Northern hemisphere. As such, :{Unplanned Afternoons}: is making a virtue of the dog days of summer by bookending the Gregorian Calendar’s splendid seventh month with shindigs on the first and last Saturdays.

You don’t need me to tell you that July was previously called Quintilis, as it was the fifth month of the ancient Roman calendar, but renamed to commemorate Julius Caesar’s birthday. And, being July junkies, I’m sure you’re already buffing up your red ruby birthstones in readiness.

So, join us on Saturday 25th as we celebrate the 206th day of the year, not to mention Constitution Day in Puerto Rico and the feast of apostle, Saint James the Greater [son of Zebedee and Salome].

And, whilst we’re at it, let’s remember Bob Dylan plugging in for the first time at the Newport Folk Festival on this day in 1965, and raise a glass to birthday boys, Thurston Moore out of Sonic Youth; Japanese wrestler, Kenzo Suzuki; and South African cricketer with a funny name, Monde Zondeki.

And, the fun doesn’t end there – we’ve also got an exciting new venue to shout about. The Alwyne is a charming boozer, only a stones-throw from Highbury & Islington tube and the north end of Upper Street. John Kettley has guaranteed glorious sunshine, so we should be outside in the beer garden but, if the weather does turn smelly, we can play inside The Alwyne’s conservatory.

They’ve also got 22 draught beers and ciders, a large wine list and a full menu, plus there’s an all-day barbecue and an outside bar. And, we’re in safe hands, as the The Alwyne is now under the stewardship of long-serving :{UA}: devotee, Rory.

:{July, July, July, It Never Seemed So Strange}:

We’ve got some old stuff, new stuff and somewhere inbetween stuff. It’s the songs you love and never get to hear, plus new tunes you won’t be able to live without.
