This month, :{Unplanned Afternoons}: is going global to celebrate Refugee Week by throwing a special party on the summer solstice. We’re very excited to welcome two DJs at the forefront of World Music in Britain, MAX REINHARDT and RITA RAY.
:{NB}:
Get there early, though, as Max is on first at 12 noon.
This will be the biggest :{Unplanned Afternoon}: in our three-year history and, consequently, we’ve secured the fabulous Corbet Place venue off Brick Lane. In addition, you can try some authentic Afghan food, cooked in front of you and watch graffiti artists creating new works on the terrace.

Max and Rita have worked together on numerous occasions, notably the Afrobeat inspired riot which is The Shrine, a club night out of which came The Shrine Synchrosystem, where they invite rappers, musicians and dancers to jam over their beats, and which has toured internationally. They also programme international music events, like London’s biggest free festival, Rise, Wychwood and Celebrating Sanctuary, of which they are Artistic Directors. They are currently writing a book on Fela Kuti, called ‘Talkin’ About Fela’.

:{RITA RAY}:
Rita is a club and radio DJ, and founding member of numerous club events. She also presents a review slot on the BBC World Service, contributes to the BBC’s Africa On Your Street website and is currently chair of the jury for the BBC Awards for World Music. And, in a previous life, she was a member of the band, Darts, who scored eight Top 20 singles and three Top 20 albums.

:{MAX REINHARDT}:
Max is a guest presenter on Late Junction for BBC Radio 3 and has also presented on Radio 4 and The World Service. He curates, plays and DJs at the hectic Radio Gagarin sessions at the Notting Hill Arts Club, which have featured acts including Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz. He is the musical director and composer for Oily Cart Theatre Company and has produced a number of remixes.

:{THE BeATMAN}:
The BeATMAN [Mervyn Kaye] is a well-travelled, vigilante superhero DJ, with a passport full of stamps from Israel, France and Japan, where he ran a club night called Après and organised a large beach festival. Closer to home, he’s played at Glastonbury, The Big Chill and three consecutive years at The Firegathering. Gotham’s own dancefloor crusader regularly DJs around London, including gigs at The Roundhouse in Camden, Bar Cuba, Elevator and The Others. The BeATMAN will be bringing the funk to :{Unplanned Afternoons}: so don’t be a Joker when he swings into action with some old hip hop and a few classic dance tracks too.

What is Refugee Week?
Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities. Refugee Week 2008 will take place from 16th to 22nd June. Click here for information on the background of Refugee Week.

What happens during the week?
Every year during Refugee Week hundreds of events are organised across the UK. In 2007, there were over 400 small and large events, ranging from big music festivals and art exhibitions to political debates, film screenings, conferences, school activities, sports and community events etc. To see examples of the type of events that happened last year check out our Highlighted Events from 2007.

Is there a theme for the events?
There is no specific theme for Refugee Week. Event organisers are encouraged to organise events around the idea that Refugee Week is a space of encounters between different communities and an opportunity to use more creative ways to bring refugee experiences closer to wider audiences. The Refugee Week slogan is Different Pasts, Shared Future.

The Refugee Week Team
The Refugee Week Team consists of the UK Coordinator for Refugee Week, Welsh and Scottish Co-ordinators, a Project Assistant and a small number of volunteers with specific skills. It leads in the central planning, coordination and promotion of national activities and initiatves that take place or culminate within Refugee Week. The Refugee Week Team is also the central UK resource providing information and marketing materials, guidance, planning and support to other participant organisations in UK cities and regions.

1. Walk north up Commercial Street.

5. It’s an open, carparky area and doesn’t look much like a street. If it’s not obvious, Wilkes Street continues south opposite the entrance and, if you reach Brick Lane before turning left, you’ve gone too far.

UNPLANNED AFTERNOONS DOES REFUGEE WEEK:
THE UNPLANNED SUMMER SOLSTICE PARTY

The long-running music and charity shindig, Unplanned Afternoons, is throwing a special party on the summer solstice to celebrate Refugee Week 2008. The event is taking place on Saturday 21st June, from 12-11pm, at the fabulous Corbet Place venue off Brick Lane in East London and will be the biggest Unplanned Afternoon in its three-year history.

The day will feature authentic Afghan food, graffiti artists and a great line-up of eclectic Unplanned Afternoons DJs, playing for free. There is no charge to get in but, as always at Unplanned Afternoons, donations will be collected in aid of charity.

This month, Unplanned Afternoons is part of Refugee Week, a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.

This will be the 40th Unplanned Afternoon since it was launched in March 2005, in response to the Boxing Day Tsunami Earthquake. So far, Unplanned Afternoons has raised thousands of pounds for 40 different charities.

My Dad’s parents were Jewish refugees and I don’t have any English bloodline and, yet, being white and not having a foreign accent, no-one tells me to ‘go home’. The representation of refugees, fostered by certain, right-wing sections of the populist media, is often misinformed and very damaging. Why am I accepted, when there remains a refusal to acknowledge the positive influence that refugees and their families bring to Britain?”

Unplanned Afternoons was born, logically enough, by accident. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon and DJ Prolix didn’t have anything planned so, when the Smackmaster Generale phoned, that’s what Prolix told him. And, that he’d discovered a patch of mould under his living room carpet. The Smackmaster Generale didn’t have much planned either, so little indeed, that coming round to see a patch of mould qualified as entertainment. Thankfully, the afternoon didn’t end there. Booze was bought, some more friends rolled up unannounced, tunes were played and, out of nowhere, a party was in full flight. At 4pm.
