:{HAPPY FRIDAY}: 20th August

Good afternoon, funstackers.
This week, I have mostly been in denial about the urgent need to renew my passport before going to Prague in ten days.

SEXY A-LEVELS

“A blog exploring the hypothesis that UK newspapers believe that only attractive girls in low cut tops do A-Levels.”

BIG SAM: Breathing Northern Fire Over The Wheat Fields Of The Beautiful Game
http://twitter.com/TheBig_Sam
“We can’t all be beautiful on the outside. Some don’t have a body like Arnold with a Denzel face. What’s important is we’re beautiful inside. That’s what Big Sam thinks anyway. Thankfully, I’m an awesome person, who also happens to be sexier than a pair of honey-covered t!t$.”

SKIP1.ORG
http://www.skip1.org
“We’re asking people like you to skip 1 thing for 1 day - a coffee, a pack of gum, that magazine at the checkout stand, a car wash, a haircut, a manicure, a cab fare - take the money you would have spent on those things and donate instead to Skip1.org.  Public donations go to the acquisition and distribution of food and water projects worldwide.”

DIE ANTWOORD: Enter The Ninja

Over SIX MILLION hits; laugh, cry, laugh, cry, laugh, cry, laugh, cry?
“This is like the coolest song I ever heard in my whole life.  F**k all of you who said I wouldn’t make it, who said I was a loser, said I was a no-one, said I was a f**kin’ psycho.  But, look at me now: all up on the interweb, world-wide, 2009, futurista, enter the ninja.”

ZIGGY STARDUST CAME FROM ISLEWORTH
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tdpz8
“Ziggy Stardust was a rock and roll fantasy. But David Bowie’s fictional rockstar, around whom his 1972 album, stage show, and film were built, was inspired by a real performer, Vince Taylor, born in Isleworth, Middlesex.”

THE PEOPLE’S SUPERMARKET
http://www.peoplessupermarket.org
72-78 Lamb’s Conduit Street, London, WC1N 3LP
“This is a supermarket that is run by the people for the people, selling the best food at the lowest possible prices.  Anyone can join The People’s Supermarket - and as a member you must work in the shop for a few hours every month. Because the workforce is nearly all volunteers, staff costs are kept low - which means your shopping can be cheaper.”

HIPSTAMATIC

“In 1982 Bruce and Winston Dorbowski began producing a DIY camera made entirely of plastic after dropping out of art school. The molds were made by hand and each camera was assembled in the brothers’ cabin workspace on the Wisconsin River. The Hipstamatic never become mass produced, but the application brings back the look, feel, unpredictable beauty, and fun of plastic toy cameras from the past.”

I was very sad to read today that the BBC plans to close 6Music:
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article7041944.ece
“Mark Thompson, the Director-General, will admit that the corporation, which is funded by the £3.6 billion annual licence fee, has become too large and must shrink to give its commercial rivals room to operate.”

If this is true, it feels entirely wrong-headed to me:
1: Dropping 6Music won’t give “commercial rivals room to operate”, as the station’s audience is not a priority for the commercial sector.

2: 6Music has an annual budget of around £6 million which, out of the £3.6 billion garnered from the licence fee, is small change.

3: 6Music’s audience may be small, compared to Radio 1 and 2, but they are 700,000 people who aren’t served elsewhere within the BBC [or beyond].

4: Surely this is part of the BBC’s public service broadcaster remit and tweaking Radio 2’s schedule won’t satisfy 6Music’s listeners [who are license payers too].

5: 6Music does a valuable job of breaking new bands, Florence & The Machine being a good, current example, who then move on to Radio 1, win BRIT Awards, etc.

6: 6Music is probably sounding more cohesive than ever [especially during daytime] and commands listener loyalty that other stations would kill for.

7: Eight years after its launch, wouldn’t the real waste of the license fee be to spend millions of pounds building a station, only to close it down?

If any of this bothers you, please make some noise, whether it’s complaining to Auntie Beeb [details above], using social networking gubbins, or writing something for:

:{JOHN ARNE RIISE}: Pumpkin Power Has Left The Building

JOHN ARNE RIISE
:{JOHN ARNE RIISE}: Pumpkin Power Has Left The Building
I can barely type through the tears. Black armbands all round for my little squashed cucurbita. And, I still want to know-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, how he scored that goal.
[‘Thanks For The Memories, John’ from LiverpoolFC.tv]
[‘AS Roma Sign Riise From Liverpool’ from BBC Sport]

Italian Serie A club AS Roma have signed Norway defender John Arne Riise from Liverpool for £4m. According to Roma’s website, the 27-year-old has signed a four-year deal after Liverpool had given them permission to discuss personal terms. Left-back Riise signed for Liverpool in 2001 and helped them to the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League titles. Roma, who will play in the Champions League next season, have been targeting Riise for some time.

Riise, who notched up more than 300 appearances for Liverpool after moving to Anfield from Monaco seven years ago, played second fiddle to Fabio Aurelio for much of last season after the Brazilian established himself as the club’s first choice left-back. When Aurelio came off injured during last season’s Champions semi-final first leg against Chelsea, Riise replaced him only to score an own goal in stoppage time.

Last year, Riise was involved in an infamous spat with former team-mate Craig Bellamy after a karaoke night on a team bonding trip to Portugal. Bellamy was fined £80,000 by the club for his involvement and stated he had “lost control”.

:{TENORI-ON}:

TENORI-ON - Toshio Iwai

:{TENORI-ON}:
Media artist Toshio Iwai and and Yu Nishibori of the Music and Human Interface Group, Yamaha Center for Advanced Sound Technology, have collaborated to design a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century, TENORI-ON. A 16×16 matrix of LED switches allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a “visible music” interface. It consists of a hand-held screen with a grid of LED switches, any of which can be activated in a number of ways to create an evolving musical soundscape. The LED switches are held within a magnesium frame, which has two built-in speakers located on the top of frame, as well as a dial and buttons that control the type of sound and beats per minute produced. For DJs & producers it is a unique performance tool enabling them to perform using MIDI and load the TENORI-ON with samples to ‘jam / improvise’ within their set BPMs.
