What have you got planned when the school bell rings on Friday? Microwave chicken tikka for one, endless repeats of Friends on E4 and a cheap bottle of pinot grigio? I don’t think so. I’ve got a far better idea: collar a couple of chums, launch yourself in the general direction of Old Street, sashay gently down City Road to The Eagle, get on the good foot and do the bad thing. Please feel free to drop in and loudly exclaim at the bar, “blimey, Charlie, bless my ears if this isn’t the phattest dope ever laid down on wax”.

:{TSOTRH}: KRIS MENACE & SPOOKY: stereophonic

kris-menace-spooky-stereophonic.jpg

A weekly slice of pedigree Pop, guaranteed to send a herd of bison thundering through your underpants at a rate of knots:
KRIS MENACE & SPOOKY: stereophonic [compuphonic]

Three years ago, I wrote enthusiastically about a slow-burning, nine minute opus called ‘Discopolis’.  It originally appeared in 2005 by Kris Menace (Christophe Hoeffel), this time in partnership with Lifelike (Laurent Heinrich). It’s a great, synth-heavy affair, capable of making you wonder if Jan Hammer was really onto something.

‘Stereophonic’ is on Monsieur Menace’s label, Compuphonic, which has so far only released his own tracks, including collaborations with Felix Da Housecat (‘Artificial’) and Fred Falke (‘Fairlight’). I have misty memories of Spooky as nearly men from the ’90s, but knowing Hoeffel’s previous, ‘Stereophonic’ immediately piqued my interest. And, it’s cracking. That said, it’s by no means original and, like ‘Discopolis’ before, perhaps this is evidence of Menace’s talents as a musical magpie.

To be fair, the track is self-consciously retrospective, announcing itself with the spoken word introduction, “for my next number, I’d like to return to the classics”. The rather reflective organ which follows could come from any decade during the last fifty years, but reminds me most of Giorgio Moroder’s ‘Tears’. That seems fitting, as ‘Tears’ was sampled by another skilled larcenist, DJ Shadow, on his track, ‘Organ Donor’.

A minute in and the production introduces more electronic components, which could have been borrowed from Orbital, perhaps ‘Lush 3-1’ on their sophomore ‘Brown’ album. And, when the beats drop, I’m again taken back to the early ’90s and the drums from something like Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State Of Consciousness’. None of this, however, is problematic; there is an undoubted artistry in taking the finest elements from music’s heritage and conjuring some fresh, new alchemy.

Kris Menace’s new single, ‘Scaler’, is out now on Compuphonic.

“Girls who are boys,
Who like boys to be girls,
Who do boys like they’re girls,
Who do girls like they’re boys,
Always should be someone you really love.”

:{the premise is very simple}:
Ten hours of tunes and every one must include a boy or girl’s name in the title. And, you know, sometimes restrictions can, paradoxically, open up new worlds of possibility…  But, that’s enough chin stroking, so let’s get ready to line up the ladies and gents.

Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot are bringing their friends, Bonnie and Clyde – if they can drag themselves away from Jay-Z and Beyoncé.  Sweet Gene Vincent is whispering sweet nothings to Sweet Jane; Nick Cave’s getting agricultural with Lazarus; Ken’s trying to tune in REM’s wireless; and Judy’s asleep in the corner, dreaming of horses. Good golly, Miss Molly, I heard Louis Armstrong saying “hello, Dolly” to a friend of The Killers, which is odd, because her name’s Jenny and, when it’s all done and dusted, hopefully Sheila will take a bow.

As you may know by now, The Unplanned Allstars play the best music in the world, every month and all the money collected goes to charity. We’re here to unplan your afternoon and make the world a simpler place. Good music, with good people, for a good reason and ridiculous eclecticism, guaranteed, since 2005.
